Drat ... A month late.

June 7 was Karl Urban’s birthday and he is now 37 years old. We want to wish him a belated happy birthday and you are out of your Vulcan mind if you didn’t think that he nailed the role as Dr. Leonard "Bones" McCoy in the new Star Trek.

As noted in the TrekMovie.com review and many others, Karl Urban’s McCoy was the closest thing to the original. As a fan of the show, Urban went out of his way to bring as much of the original Star Trek into his performance, while still making it his own.

Karl Urban strenuously objects to space travel as Doctor McCoy

According to most reviewers, one of the stand out performances in the new J.J. Abrams Star Trek movie is Karl Urban’s interpretation of Doctor [Bones] McCoy. In his brief interview for SciFi Now, which features interviews with all the Star Trek cast members, Urban talked a little about how he perceives McCoy.

“He is a character full of compassion and pain. He has an amazing personal prime directive to help and heal others, whether friend or foe. That’s his calling in life. I see him as a staunch and avid supporter of Jim Kirk. Through the course of this film, we get to see their friendship develop from their initial meeting to their days in Starfleet, and we come to understand the bond of their friendship. To me that was often the most interesting dynamic in material I got to play, because there is a distinct difference between how McCoy feels about Kirk or, say, any given situation and how he reacts.”

To be honest I didn't know if I was going to do anything with this movie. I haven't seen it and I don't know if I plan to. (I might)

Out of the Blue is a 2006 New Zealand film directed by Robert Sarkies and starring Karl Urban. The film premiered at the 2006 Toronto Film Festival in Canada and was released in New Zealand on October 12th 2006 to minor controversy. The film has since grossed well over $1 million at the New Zealand box-office taking it into the top ten highest grossing local films.

The film is based on the Aramoana Massacre that occurred over a period of two days on 13 November and 14 November 1990. Resident David Gray, an unemployed gun collector, went on a rampage in which he shot 13 people dead, before Gray himself was shot by police.

The film deals with violence in a realistic but restrained way.

The effect the film has on its audience is likely to depend on the circumstances of the viewer. Mr Hastings said “for some of those closely involved in the events it portrays the film may be upsetting and traumatic. Other people may view it as a sensitive portrayal of the responses of ordinary people to horrific events.” - Wikipedia

You are probably wondering if I'm going to say anything about Star Trek. I am. But until I'm finished with it here are some pictures from the movie PATHFINDER.


Pathfinder, a remake of the 1987 Norwegian movie Ofelas, opened in theaters on September 8, 2004. In this movie, Karl plays the grown version of a Norse boy left behind on the Eastern Shore after a shipwreck. He was raised by the very native inhabitants his people had intended to destroy. When the Vikings return to finish what they started, Karl's character, now known as Ghost, fights to defend those who are now his family.

THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK

The sequel to the cult sci-fi hit PITCH BLACK, (one of those movies I've seen dozen's of times) sees Vin Diesel enthusiastically returning to his role as Richard B. Riddick.

Making the movie a double treat, though, is the appearance of Karl Urban as Vaako.

Vaako is a Necromonger Commander and loyal to the faith (a faith rather alien to anything we know). He believes in loyalty and only betrays the Lord Marshal after his ever plotting wife convinces him that the Lord Marshal is unworthy of lordship.
