Éomer rode with his king to the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, and fought bravely for Rohan and Gondor.

Théoden, the king, was mortally wounded in the battle, and named Éomer as his successor.

Believing his sister Éowyn to be slain by the Witch-king, he threw himself and his men wildly at the enemy.


Surrounded and outnumbered by the Orcs, he was rescued when Aragorn arrived from Pelargir, thereby fulfilling his prediction that they would meet and fight together in battle. He later accompanied Aragorn to the Gates of Mordor and the Field of Cormallen. - see Wikipedia entry Eomer.

Karl Urban launched into the second installment of The Lord of the Rings trilogy, The Two Towers, starring in the dynamic role of Rohan warrior Eomer. Director/Writer/Producer Peter Jackson cast New Zealand actor Urban in The Lord of the Rings after viewing a rough cut of the critically acclaimed indie film The Price of Milk, which garnered Urban a Best Actor nomination at The New Zealand Film Awards.

Camera Woes

PREHISTORIC CAMERA

I'm getting ready to leave for a writer's conference and thought this would be a great time to learn how to use the digital camera Cory gave me. I've been saying for while I need it so I can add my own pictures to my blog.

So I climbed up to the top bookshelf. Yes, climbed. My bookshelves go all the way to the ceiling. Got the camera from the back corner...

dusted it off.

Uh-oh. Problem. The camera isn't a digital.

I could have sworn it was a digital. You know, "Here, I got a newer, better model, this is still good, do you want it?"

Well, it wasn't exactly Precambrian, but not much better than Jurassic in the modern age of computers.

What I held in my hands... *wiping off the several months layer of dust--cough, choke.*

I don't get up to the top bookshelf very often. That's where I keep my really old books... and really old cameras, apparently.

What I held in my hands was

A Minolta Freedom Zoom 115 Date.

Fancy name, but not a digital.

When I looked it up on line I found it on a Camera Museum web site courtesy of Mr. Martin. [Mr. Martin's Web Site] Cameras, computers, calculators, bicycles, typewriters, cars, and other tech.

Which would explain why there isn't a view thingy on the back.

What I thought I had, a Minolta DiMAGE s 414.

But didn't.

This is a 2003 camera, which still makes it ancient. But it has a view thingy on the back. Minolta withdrew from the camera business in 2006.

Second problem. I still don't have a digital camera to tote around the writer's conference. So, I'll have to beg and borrow pics for future blogs... you know, of all those famous authors I'm getting to hobnob with.

Random thought...
I wonder if my old Instamatic is up there in those dusty bookshelves somewhere.

A Book I Didn't Think I'd Like.

When I read the description of this book on Amazon it reminded me of M. Night Shyamalan's The Village. I wondered if Carrie Ryan wrote something similar (and how could she without legal consequences?), then wondered if she fixed what I thought was a major flaw in the movie. My curiosity got the better of me, so I picked it up.

Read it in one day.

Did I like it? Obviously it kept me interested.

What did I think of it? It's beautifully written. Puzzling because I don't like present tense. I was half way into the first chapter before I realized it was in present tense.

I spent the rest of the time trying to figure out how Carrie Ryan had accomplished it without it feeling like present tense.

What did I think of the story? It isn't my usual read. I've stayed up countless nights reading Dean Koontz and others. I read a lot of dark fantasy--YA and what not. But I usually stay away from this subject. Interesting that I finished it.

Is it like The Village? Sort of, but way creepier.

By the end I had a few questions I can't pose here without spoiling the book for others.

I liked it. But after a few days of thinking about it, I think I'm more disturbed by it. And those questions have only gotten stronger.

Don't be surprised to see The Forest of Hands and Teeth on the big screen someday. It's exactly the kind of story movie producer's will be anxious to get their hands on.
